Chilean stew

I got out my down comforter on Monday night, but today was gorgeous. We are down to the very last tomatoes at the stand. Chandra and I secured most of the winter squash in apple crates and wire netting so that squirrels won't eat it in the greenhouse. I picked a pony (5/8 bushel) of string beans this afternoon - there are so many of them!

I made a wonderful Chilean stew on Monday with winter squash (Red Kuri?), green beans, kidney beans, and tomatoes, and I've been eating it ever since. Tomorrow I will make some pesto with the last of the basil. Last week a woman bought some green tomatoes from the stand, and I asked her how to make fried green tomatoes: dip them in buttermilk and then flour (or cornmeal or seasoned bread crums) and then fry. Delicious. I tried sweet potato greens last week (didn't know they existed!), and they are excellent - very tender with a great flavor, sauteed with garlic and olive oil. Beet greens aren't bad either. My housemate who is from Japan made some fabulous green curried vegetables last week, but seeing as she put in an entire 6-oz. can of green curry, I could eat about one bite without bursting into flame. I ate three rolls before I could taste anything again. We just started selling lettuce, and it is the best lettuce I have ever eaten.

Peace and dirt underneath your feet -
