Waikouaiti: Ordinary Beauty
Having just finished a tour of some of the most beautiful sights on earth, I thought Mount Pleasant Homestead would give me a rest from soaking in grandeur. But as it turns out, the Native American prayer is right:
May it be beautiful before me.
May it be beautiful behind me.
May it be beautiful below me.
May it be beautiful above me.
May it be beautiful all around me.
In beauty it is finished.
In beauty it is finished.
In beauty it is finished: The flutter of a fantail bird above my head. The wind stirring up fallen leaves. The sun illuminating a cloud in brilliant orange. The dark blue-gray of the sea meeting the light gray-blue of the sky. The smell of fresh-cut grass. The order of laundry on the clothes line. The fiery red of a Japanese maple. A cat at my ankles. The irridescent aqua-blue of the water on the shoreline in the evening. A clean-swept kitchen floor. The hollow of a tree stump on a hill. Ivy on a gate post. A line of trees on a mountain in the distance. Always, the songs of birds.
What I want is this: to notice the twilight each day.
