Planning Stats

21 days until touch-down in Auckland. I am busy reading the Rough Guide to New Zealand and making to-do lists. It is true: tasks expand or contract to the time you give them - I will not be done planning until I leave the country.
Some trip-planning stats:
1. Backpacks purchased: 4
2. Backpacks to return: 3
3. Shoes and hiking boots purchased: 4
4. Shoes and hiking boots to return: 4
5. Shoe retail stores called: 21
6. Number of farms circled in the wwoofing directory (out of 800): 178
7. Projected number of weeks to spend in New Zealand: 52
8. Successful phone calls to New Zealand farms: 1
9. Phone calls to Industrial Bank to determine the international ATM fee: 12
10. Length of flight from San Fran to Auckland: 12 hours 45 minutes

....and some things left to buy:
1. padlock
2. travel towel
3. light-weight shorts
4. jeans for the farm that are not too big for me
5. sunglasses clips for new glasses
6. digital camera
7. watch
8. inflatable neck pillow
9. yoga mat
10. underwear for justice

Bronwyn,

Yes, jeans that aren't too big are a very important thing. especially if you are going to be bending over a lot to pick carrots or what have you.

Bronwyn,

Wow! Tech savvy indeed! I too am curious about "underwear for justice." For me, that would probably be a fancy name I'd give to underwear, but maybe you're on to something I don't know about. I love the statistics. Wow, lots of phone calls and farm reviews. I should get someone to keep stats on my work. Actually, no I shouldn't - I don't think I could take that kind of scrutiny. People would probably find out that I'm only having 1-2 productive hours of work per day... and many hours of thinking about how to be productive.

Good luck with your remaining packing and preparations and congratulations on finding a farm!

Peace,

Jeff B.

Hey Brownie,

I am another one in wonder of the underwear for justice, I don't know what that means but I am certain I need a pair...or a few.

As far as the camera goes...Several of my friends and I have the Kodak Easy Share camera...(promo through OSU) and as a warning: the battery door fractures upon impact. So, buy a roll of duct tape with that one...it is cheaper than the replacement door which they charge $100!

geez!

Good luck with the goods,

Heather W.

I must give all the credit to Beth for coining the phrase "underwear for justice." (see also "cleaning products for justice")
Check out www.americanapparel.com - sweatshop-free! Unfortunately their market is mainly to very thin people (they haven't started a "models for justice" line yet) and they sell mostly undergarments (and t-shirts!), but it's a good start.

Correction: www.amerianapparel.net - thanks John!
And a travel towel is lighter-weight and supposedly dries faster than a regular towel. No anti-lost magnets yet.

See also checks for justice and restaurants for justice. any noun followed by "for justice" implies sustainability, fair trade, progressive politics or veganism...all with a hint of patchouli.

Hey Bronwynian. I've heard about your new adventure and I'll be keeping up with you. On the comment that "tasks expand or contract to the time you give them," my new mantra is "don't discriminate against the last minute." I mean, what's wrong with it? TTYS, Neely
